Journaling Can Be One Of The Best Things You Do In 2018

Young female is writing notes and planning her schedule.Journaling is so beneficial because it helps us track things that we are not normally aware of. So, if you ask yourself what drew you to the study of compassionate communication, at the core, it is a desire to expand your consciousness around the way you communicate, not just with other people, but also with yourself.

It’s a practice that we can develop for daily self-connection. However, the most difficult thing about developing a daily discipline in journaling is often the questions, Where do I start? How do I start? I have nothing to say!

So I’m going to offer a suggestion that I have learned over the years of teaching nonviolent communication in workshops, teaching creative writing, and teaching a program in unblocking creativity that combines NVC & The Artist’s Way based on the book by Julia Cameron.

When I sit down to do my daily journaling, I Have Easy Things to Put In Each Entry. I start with the basics of NVC: OFNR, otherwise known as Observations, Feelings, Needs, and Requests. So I simply start with the observations — Who? What? Where? When? Why? and How?

Then I move on to what I am feeling. Then I consider needs met and needs unmet. Then I check to do if there are any things I’d like to do that day to meet needs.

Here are some other suggestions:

Just a list of things I did that day.

What did I feel during the day?

What am I grateful for? List maybe 3 things.

What challenged me today?

How did I deal with that challenge?

What did I savor on this day?

If you’re longing to learn more about compassionate communication and the fundamentals, RMCCN has a 5-week workshop starting in February. For more information, check this link to The Art of Compassion. We hope to see you there!

UNBENDING INTENT

WarGoddess DON JUAN TAUGHT CARLOS CASTANEDA THAT UNBENDING INTENT IS A SPECIAL STATE OF MIND REQUIRING A RIGOROUS, FIERCE PURPOSE. It is a single-mindedness that a warrior-sorceress exhibits, an extremely well-defined purpose and the catalyst to trigger a warrior’s unchangeable decisions. Hence why a warrior-sorceress has power in all of her words and actions. Unbending Intent can also be the catalyst that propels one’s Assemblage Point to a new position, a position which in turn generates unbending intent.

Castaneda summed up the teaching this way, “Impeccability begins with a single act that has to be deliberate, precise and sustained. If that act is repeated long enough, one acquires a sense of unbending intent which can be applied to anything else. If that is accomplished the road is clear. One thing will lead to another until the warrior realizes his/her full potential.”

Two basic qualities of warriors are sustained effort and unbending intent.

The key is to make a decision about what your fierce purpose is and then commit to it with unbending intent.

I learned a lot this summer because I gave myself space and time to think.

Stalking Yourself & Hunting Power

Destiny as a Knight Don Juan Matus taught us that a warrior holds all possibilities in her mind and then chooses to believe and acts on that belief. We are doing that all the time whether we are conscious of it or not. Fortunately there are ways to become more aware of our core limiting beliefs and the stories we tell ourselves. This is what don Juan called “stalking yourself,” or “hunting power.” You become like a jaguar on the trail of a river rat. The “river rat” is the core limiting belief.

As an example of this, I said prior to meeting someone for a date, “I hope that regardless of the outcome, we’ll at least become friends.” My intention was to express my interest while also releasing attachment to a specific outcome. His interpretation was something like this: “If she’s settling for friendship already, she must have low self-esteem.”

When I heard that, I felt a chuckle inside me. I am always in awe of the way two human beings can experience very different realities when the observations are the same.

As a warrior, my initial response is to take that in as information. There is no need to defend a view point. It offers an opportunity to see myself more clearly and to see myself through someone else’s eyes more clearly, and to see another person more clearly. I don’t need to decide what’s true. I can hold all possibilities in my mind at once. In this way, it allows me to “stalk myself,” to see if there is truth in what this person said. After all, if he is reflecting to me some truth that he sees, wouldn’t I rather know that? Or would I prefer to live in a deluded state?

Ultimately it’s not about choosing to believe his interpretation or mine; it’s simply about holding all possibilities at once and letting them do their alchemical work. If I “choose to believe” anything, it will likely be, “I can always open my heart to giving myself more unconditional love.” There is no right or wrong. There is nothing to defend. But we can choose to be open or choose to be closed.

In another situation, I observed my mother reacting to a request to attend my new online workshop, “Unleash Your Creativity!” which is a blending of NVC and The Artist’s Way. I want her to understand the work I do, but after 8 days and 8 short You Tube videos, she said, “I think I’m lost. I seem to be missing a lot of your daily videos. I’m trying to sort them and watch them in order and can’t.”

In the same email, she talked about how she has trouble communicating in two of her most important relationships. I suspect the reason she can’t “sort them and watch them,” and is considering dropping out of the workshop, is because it’s leading her into an Initiation, a Transformation, and that scares the crap out of her.

She’s a a trained mathematician, philosopher, and computer scientist who worked for Martin Marietta for 10 years, raised two small children on her own, overcame alcoholism, did two stints in the Peace Corp, hiked the Continental Divide trail, wrote and published two hiking guides, which are still used to this day, hikes the Colorado Trail every summer, and I could list many other significant accomplishments, yet she’s telling me she can’t sort 8 videos and watch them in order.

When she wants to through-hike a trail, she is phenomenally capable and competent. It’s simply a choice.

Without rejecting anything off-hand, we can look deeply at what we choose to tell ourselves. We can look deeply at what we choose to do.

That is how we stalk ourselves, stalk our river rats, and hunt power.

Integrating the Elements of Fire & Ice

Thisfire_and_ice_goddess_by_forevershining blog post is a companion to my video about Saturn in Capricorn, which occurs tonight at 9:49pm Mountain Time. I’ve been looking forward to this moment for a long time. In some sense I’ve been looking forward to it for about 30 years since the last time Saturn was in Capricorn. Its total transit in a sign lasts about 2.5 to 3 years, and it takes approximately 29 years to move completely around the Zodiac. In my opinion, Saturn is at his best when he is in Capricorn because Capricorn is his domicile. It is the location in which Saturn is best able to express his energy.

Saturn in Capricorn is going to be all about Integration & Alignment. I’ll discuss this in more detail in my video, but for this blog post, I want to focus on one specific aspect that I see, which is Integrating the Elements of Fire & Ice. I want to explore what that means.

First of all, I want to make clear that I come from a relatively “magical” perspective, but I want to explain what that means since many people may have preconceptions about what the word “magical” actually means.

The word “magical” has similar root meanings and origins to the words “mage,” “imagine,” “image,” “imagination,” “imagery,” etc. But what many people don’t understand is that the root meaning of the word “mage” is “make”. It means “to make”. A mage is simply someone who “makes” something. In a sense there is absolutely nothing magical about it… in terms of the meaning that the word conjures up for most people today. wizard-staff-female-mage

So how did the simple word and concept of making something become so mystical and imbued with other-worldliness? How did it become aligned with the idea of the supernatural?

Maybe that’s because in truth there is something extraordinary and misunderstand about what it means to make things, either making objects, or making things happen. So on one level, it’s not mystical, supernatural, or other-worldly at all, but on another level it is.

I would suggest that perhaps by imbuing it with mystical, supernatural, and other-worldly powers, it was a way for certain people to maintain power and not share it with the ordinary, common masses. Sound familiar?

But what if we, the “ordinary” people, weren’t afraid of our own power? What if we weren’t afraid to truly “make” things, to “manifest” things, to be creators? What if we were willing to embrace our own magical powers without shame or fear?

So, without the shame and fear that some might equate to the use of “magic,” (now that you understand what it really means), I am going to use the language of magic.

Certain mages, spiritual knights, and shamans specialize in spells of a specific element, such as Lightning, Fire, or Ice. Ultimately all elements need to be integrated to fully actualize one’s power, but let’s start with two for now: Fire & Ice.

If you want to unlock your ultimate magical power and then integrate it into your own being, your own life, your relationships, your community, and eventually into your society, you’ll need to understand the basic concepts of Alchemy. deepwood_librarian_by_carolina_eade

The basic idea of Alchemy is that all of us have “lead” within us. The lead is the clumped, repressed, unprocessed energy that is trapped in our beings. It’s the pain, the woundedness, the fear, anger, shame, anything that we can’t bear to look at, feel, acknowledge, or own. That is also known as the Shadow. Every human being has a Shadow. It is impossible to eliminate the Shadow.

Let me put it this way: Humans are the integration of Light and Shadow. We are the living rainbow. We channel the Light and Shadow energies and we integrate them. When the system is functioning at its highest level, there is complete integration. But when the Shadow has not been integrated, the energy becomes clumped and it clogs up the system so that the energy can not flow freely.

Ironically, the more energy is clumped and clogging up the flow of energy, the more it actually depletes us of energy and power. It leaks energy and power, like a house with shoddy construction.

So what I’m suggesting here is an Alchemical process called Integration. Because I’m using the language and imagery of Alchemy, I need to explain a few things so that you can understand the basics of Alchemy. It starts with what is known as the “Philosopher’s Stone.” It is the Philosopher’s Stone that allows Lead to be turned into Gold, which is basically the process of Integrating the Shadow, transmuting the Lead (the unprocessed, repressed, disowned pain, trauma, woundness, shame) into the Gold of Enlightenment in order to fully empower oneself.

The Philosopher’s Stone is simply one’s own Consciousness and Awareness. The more you polish your own Consciousness and Awareness, your own Philosopher’s Stone, the more capacity you have to integrate your Shadow. The Rainbow is where Light and Shadow meet. Female_mage_docile

The reason why I’m focusing on the elements of Fire and Ice in this particular post is because of the astrological alignments. It is they who are pointing the way.

The Fire Signs and their House Rulerships are: 1 – Aries; 5 – Leo; 9 – Sagittarius

Right now, astrologically, these three signs are highly activated. Uranus is in Aries, the North Node is in Leo, and we have a stellium in Sagittarius consisting of Mercury Rx, Venus, the Sun, and Saturn. They are making trines to both Uranus in Aries and the North Node in Leo. So the fire element is highly activated right now.

Although Capricorn is an Earth sign, it represents certain qualities of the Earth. We can understand this better when we consider the animal that represents Capricorn which is the goat. The most interesting thing about this Capricornian Goat is that it transforms. It begins as a sea goat. It swims in the deep waters of the ocean. Then it crawls onto the land and grows legs. It starts at the base, which is what we call “sea level” and it slowly climbs higher and higher until it reaches the summit of the highest mountain.

What’s interesting about that it the fact that there is water at the base (the seas and the oceans) and there is water at the summit (the snow and ice).

Fire is an element that represents inspiration. It is the Divine energy of Inspiration. It is the energy of action and creation. The Sun in Sagittarius is currently aligned with the Galactic Center. A gateway is opening for Divine Inspiration to come through for your creative expression. So embrace that Fire energy, but also understand that Fire can be destructive or creative depending on how it is expressed.

When integrated with the Icy energies of Capricorn and Saturn, you can bring that Fiery Cosmic Download through the Gateway and into physical manifestation. It is through the Integration of these energies that you become a powerful manifestor.

There is risk in wielding power, creative power. You are the tool for transmitting the Divine Inspiration and bringing it into manifestation. That’s why it’s so important to work on yourself as a transmitter for that Divine Inspiration. There is a relationship between risk, hazard, and vulnerability.

Today, Saturn is in the Fire Sign of Sagittarius, close to the heat of the Sun and trining the Chaotic Lightning Bolt, Uranium atomic energy of Uranus. It’s a powerful energy. Now we want to integrate it with the energy of cold, hard reality. Bring that fiery creative energy of Divine Inspiration through into physical manifestation. That is the lesson of Saturn moving from Sagittarius to Capricorn today.

As I mentioned above, the precise mathematical moment occurs at 9:49pm Mountain Time.

My suggestion for this moment in time is to take at least 15 minutes surrounding that particular moment for some quiet meditation, prayer, and contemplation. Turn it into a simple ritual. Light a candle. Allow yourself to sink into a quiet reverie. Call on your Higher Power. Then allow yourself to write down whatever comes into your mind. Do a timed writing for as long as you desire. Set a timer and keep your hand moving during that entire time. Do not stop. Do not censor what comes through. Just let it pour out onto the page and listen.

Normally my personal readings are $100 per hour.

KNOWING WHAT YOU WANT

lettinggoI used to know what I wanted, and I went in pursuit of it for many years. In some ways I was highly successful, in other ways not so much. Because I hadn’t achieved the level of success I desired, and I felt stuck in a rut, I radically dissolved all aspects of my life, left my home state, moved to L.A. and set out to build a new life, in a new place, with new people and new experiences.

That, too, turned out not to meet the needs I was longing to meet, so I ended up in a long hallway between one door closing and another opening up. This long hallway caused me to deeply re-evaluate what it was that I truly wanted.

What I learned from this experience is that sometimes different parts of myself want different things. I might think I want one thing, when in fact, The One Who’s Running the Show (as I call her) wants something completely different.

Then I end up feeling frustrated, wondering why I can’t manifest what I think I want. In truth, The One Who’s Running the Show wants something different. The reason I call that part of myself, The One Who’s Running the Show is because she’s the one who gets what she wants. So in order for me to bring my inner being into alignment such that my outer world reflects my inner world, I have to get in touch with that part of myself. She’s the one running the show. She’s the one who knows what she really wants and she’s the one who will make it happen. The other parts of myself can either be at war with her or get in step and help her to accomplish her goals.

Let me give you an example: When your life feels either scattered and chaotic, or you feel like you’re in a rut, those are the times when you aren’t in alignment with The One Who’s Running the Show inside your own self.

This happened in my own life when I returned to my home state of Colorado. Eventually I found an apartment and took whatever work I could find to pay my bills, but I ended up feeling miserable, overworked, underpaid, tired, and utterly exhausted. I felt like every ounce of energy was being sucked out of me just so I could make money that I would immediately give to someone else.

I thought something was terribly wrong. How did I go from being successfully self-employed, doing what I loved, to working every waking moment for a pittance?

Then I realized the truth of the matter: I hadn’t gotten in touch with what it was that I really wanted. So I took some time to think about it deeply, considering every aspect of my life and putting it all into an order of priorities.

After doing all that, I realized that my highest priority at that moment was completing the master’s program I had entered. I was a quarter of the way into it, but I was so exhausted that I couldn’t stay awake long enough to do my homework. I was faltering because I’d let so many other things distract me from the one thing that mattered most in my life at that particular time.

I had to find a way to bring all parts of myself back into alignment with that primary goal.

If you’re experiencing something similar, that your inner and outer worlds are not in alignment, stay tuned. I will be exploring how Nonviolent Communication and other consciousness-expanding technologies can help bring you back into alignment, to a place of authenticity.
