Malibu or Bust!

https://d33zkqzv7i9ae0.cloudfront.net/images/locations/medium/288.jpgWell, our West Coast Junket is on its way to Leo Carrillo State Park in Malibu, California.  malibucoastline

We’ll also spend time in Santa Monica, which is 40 minutes from the campsite.

It’s got a nice beach and Ocean Front Walk.  I’ve posted links to it on my website, but it’s still a city, so we can play it by ear.  If you want to go into the city with me, you’re welcome to.  You can visit venues with me, or I could drop you off at the beach, or at the public library.  The library is only a half mile from the pier.  So you could walk between the two.  I found lots of trails and parks as well, so those are also options.  I don’t want you to feel like we have to be glued at the hip.  You can check out the maps I’ve linked to on my website and think about what you’d like to do.

There’s also a library in Malibu with a few grocery stores, Starbucks, Subway, and Chevron nearby.  And there’s a temp agency right next to the library.

There are lots of Trails and Parks:

Spend time in Palisades Park.  After all, that’s what Eckhart Tolle did, spent two years in California, sitting on park benches.

There are parks all along Mulholland Dr. like Franklin Canyon Park.  From Mulholland take Franklin Canyon Drive.  Looks like there is a parking lot at the trailhead of Toyon Trail and Torrey Pines Trail.  The trailhead for Oak Trail is nearby, just off Coldwater Canyon Avenue.

Just off Laurel Canyon Blvd. at Fryman Road, there appears to be a bus stop and parking lot at the trailhead of Betty B. Dearing Trail.  This trail winds through Wilacre Park.

To get to Wonder View Trail Head, take Hollywood Freeway (101) to Barham Blvd. to Lake Hollywood Drive to Wonder View Drive.

Looks like the only way to get to the Santa Monica state beach is to walk to Colorado Avenue, which is just a block and a half from the hostel.  I want to take the Ocean Front Walk all the way from one end, at Will Rogers Beach, to the other end of Venice Beach.

It’s also close to Tongva Park and Santa Monica Public Library on Santa Monica Blvd. between 6th & 7th.

Christine Emerson Reed Park is at Wilshire & 7th.

Memorial Park is between Colorado and Olympic Blvd. & 14th to 16th Streets

There’s a Starbuck’s at Colorado and 22nd, across the street from the DMV.

Colorado Center Park is at Broadway and 26th.

Clover Park is at 25th & Ocean Park Blvd.

Marine Park is at Marine Street & 16th

Ashland Park is at Ashland & 17th

Douglas Park and Starbuck’s are at Wilshire and 25th & 26th respectively.

Westwood Park is at Veteran & Rochester.

I can take the E. Sepulveda Fire Road to the Getty View Trailheads in Getty View Park, then I can go hiking.

Take the Mandeville Canyon Road to Westridge Trailhead.

Take Mulholland Drive to San Vincente Mountain Park.

Take Westridge Road to the West Mandeville Fire Road to a spot where I can park and hike the West Mandeville Ridge Trail.

Take Bayliss Road to Queensferry Raod to the Sullivan Canyon Trailhead.

From UCLA, if I take Sunset Blvd. toward the Ocean, I can find my way to Temescal Canyon Road find Temescal Gateway Park, from there I can park and enter the Temescal Canyon Trailhead. From Sunset Blvd. and Temescal Canyon Road find Temescal Gateway Park, from there I can park and enter the Temescal Canyon Trailhead.

El Medio Avenue to El Medio Trailhead.

Visit Canyonback Trail.

Visit the Stone Canyon Overlook off Mulholland Drive.  Looks like there is a little parking lot, then I can go hiking.

There appears to be a parking lot at Summer Holly Circle & Woodwardia Drive that may lead to Briarwood Park.

Check out Fossil Ridge Park on Camino de la Cumbre.

Will Rogers State Historic Park.

Paseo Miramar Trailhead  Natural area for a 5.5-mile hike (out & back) to a scenic overlook, with views along the way.

From there I can catch the  Los Liones Canyon Trail

Los Liones to ParkerMesa Topanga

Topanga State Park

Musch Camp

There is a building there at the end of Prier Road where 4 cars are parked, so I’m guessing that building is part of Musch Camp and not just private property.  From there I can catch the trails — Musch Trail and Backbone Trail

Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park

Mulholland Drive to Santa Maria Road to N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. I see a parking area and trailheads.  From N. Topanga Canyon Road (27) take Bonilla Drive to Hillside Drive to Prier Road to Musch Camp.
