The Death Card — Transformation & Rebirth

Death CardIn the Tarot of the Hermetic Tradition, almost all versions of the Death card show a symbol of resurrection or rebirth. To progress in life, our old self must die, just as a snake sheds its old skin to reveal a shiny new one. This is the message of the card: Death must be conquered by the regeneration of the soul (the psyche), and he who knows this shall return stronger and more integrated.

These themes are especially pronounced right now because we’re heading into the winter season (less than a month away), which is symbolic of death.  But I think this year it will be even more intense because of the astrological alignments.  We have about one month before things begin to change dramatically.

It will start on the Winter Solstice, December 21st, 2013 when Venus turns retrograde.  Then on Christmas Day, the Moon and Mars oppose Uranus.  Expect fireworks!  Whenever an “inner planet” opposes Uranus, it brings to the surface anything that’s been buried for a long time, repressed emotions, weaknesses in relationships and situations…. it will all be unearthed.

The key to turning Death into Rebirth is to look very closely at what’s happening in yourself and in others.  Have you been denying your true feelings and needs?  Now is the time that you will express your true feelings, but if you’ve been repressing them for a long time, it might come out looking like a volcanic eruption.  Or you may find this to be the case with someone else who’s been repressing their true feelings.

Over the first 5 months of the year, the planets (Mars, Jupiter, Pluto, and Uranus) will move into a Cardinal Grand Cross, reaching its peak of exactitude on April 23rd.  Mercury and the Moon will join the mix on April 14th, just in time for the Total Full Moon Eclipse on April 15th.

Basically the Universe is saying, “Transform of die!”

The keys to transformation and empowerment are knowing thyself and taking responsibility.  Blaming anyone or anything outside yourself only serves to put you in the victim position.  If you want to transform and empower yourself, you have to look deep within and ask, “Why have I created this in my life?”

And then ask, “What can I do to transform myself in a way that will manifest outer change?”

Almost always there is a need to let go of outworn attachments, ego attachments, old ways of thinking and behaving, and core limiting beliefs.  It’s time to try something new, something completely different that will bring healing and rebirth.
